Chapter 10

Sorcha could barely breathe. It was as if every nightmare had come to life. Her mother’s hand snaked out, heading for her wrist –

Jonathan stepped forward, his body smoothly blocking the grab. “What a surprise to find you here, Mrs. McClintock. And I see you are not alone. Hello, Mark.”

Sorcha blinked in surprise. It was the tall lawyer with piercing blue eyes from the Davenport’s house. The man her mother had made a bee-line for after Lord Davenport’s speech. The man she now suspected had been her mother’s childhood beau.

The lawyer put a hand possessively on Madeline’s shoulder. “It is good to see you again, Master Davenport.”

Madeline flushed, looking nervously between Mark and Sorcha.

Jonathan stepped to the side, bringing Sorcha into the group. “Mark, I’m not sure that you’ve met. Let me introduce to you Miss Sorcha McClintock, Madeline’s daughter.”

Mark blinked in surprise, but then recovered and put his hand out to Sorcha. She automatically placed hers in his, and waited while he lowered his head to a kiss.

His eyes drew down her form. “You are indeed the loveliest woman at this ball tonight.”

Madeline’s eyes narrowed, but she bit her lip, saying nothing.

Mark continued to focus on Sorcha. “Your mother was a beauty when she was younger, but of course her parents married her off to that Laird with the lands. Noble title and all of that. I ran into her again, maybe eight years back, and I was delighted to remake her acquaintance.”

He looked fondly down at her. “So now I must content myself with visiting whenever I’m up on business in the north.” He raised an eyebrow. “Funny that I’ve never run into you before.”

Sorcha’s heart hammered against her ribs. Funny, indeed. She had no doubt that her mother’s sudden desire to have her spend the day helping a sick neighbor or walking ten miles to fetch some herbs had something to do with these visits.

Mark looked to Madeline, and his gaze shadowed. “Some say wealth is a blessing. But it comes with its burdens. It can require one to do what one’s parents instruct, right or wrong.”

Jonathan’s arm wrapped around Sorcha’s side, giving her waist a gentle squeeze. His voice was calm. “Not always.”

Madeline’s gaze could have shredded granite, but her lips moved into a smile. “Come, Mark, I’m feeling hungry. Let’s see what is available in the next room.”

Mark smiled warmly at Jonathan and Sorcha. “Perhaps we shall see each other around.” Then he guided Madeline around the corner.

Sorcha could not take her eyes off the shadows where her mother had just vanished. She could not fully take it in that her mother was engaged in such scandalous behavior.

Jonathan followed the direction of her gaze. “Your father is more discreet, but not less at fault.”

Sorcha knew the truth of it, and yet it was hard, after all these years, to face it head on. She lowered her gaze.

Jonathan ran a hand down her hair. “Life isn’t always easy,” he pointed out, “especially when you are trapped with someone you don’t love.
